What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a titanium metal rod which is placed into the jawbone. It is used to support one or more false teeth. In practice, both the false teeth and their supporting rod are known as ‘implants’ Any number of teeth can be replaced with implants – from one single tooth to a complete set.

Implants are a well-established, tried-and-tested treatment. 90% of modern implants last for at least 15 years.

It depends on the state of the bone in the jaw whether an implant can be used to replace a missing tooth. A number of tests by the dentist will take place in order to assess the amount of bone present. If there is not enough bone, or the bone there isn’t healthy enough, then placing implant would not be possible unless bone grafting took place before-hand.

Altogether the treatment will take about 12 months, this allows the implant to integrate with the surrounding bone. As each treatment is different some could take longer others could take no more then 5 months.
