Teeth whitening…What are the options?

Teeth whitening…What are the options?

Every one wants a Hollywood smile these days, get the best Instagram selfie and look their best. Its why the teeth whitening industry has boomed over the last 10 years and has become financially accessible to the general public. There are also off the shelf kits from your local Boots or home delivery from Amazon. We´ve also discovered plenty of homemade DIY teeth whitening kits being promoted on Youtube and social media.

Your question might be, how can I get the perfect smile on a budget?

Off the shelf teeth whitening

There are plenty of these products on the market, all with their different formulas and delivery. Commonly, they use a mouth gum tray, with a whitening solution applied to individual teeth, then using a UV light to whiten.

In a heavily regulated market, the strength of these products has to be very weak, to avoid potential chemical burns on gums. Therefore the outcome of the retail teeth whitening kits may vary slightly remove some stains and brighten your teeth up a shade, the performance won't compare with professional treatment.

You can get these kits for 20 to 30 pounds, but ultimately you will get what you pay for with the performance likely to be negligible. We would also strongly recommend you avoid unregulated products which could cause permanent mouth, gum and tooth damage.

The teeth whitening toothpaste is quite frequently just a marketing ploy, you may see charcoal-based solutions. Usually, the charcoal contents are tiny, and frankly, we wouldn’t recommend using this anyway. These products may remove some stains, but we suspect this would have the same impact as normal toothpaste.

DIY options

You may have seen some videos or articles about baking powder and lemon, or other concoctions. We strongly recommend you don’t do this, there’s a high chance you will damage the enamel on your teeth, burn your gums and the final result won't whiten your teeth, to begin with. Mixing potential chemicals are unsafe and can have hazardous and unpredictable effects that have not been tested on humans in a regulated environment. Whilst they may be free to create, your dental bill to fix your teeth won't be. We strongly ask you to avoid this. If you are interested in teeth whitening and local to Stafford, please come and speak with us first.

If you are unhappy with your teeth, we would always suggest you speak to your dentist, whilst other options are cheaper, the performance will likely be very small at best and at worst extremely dangerous.

At Oriel Dental, we have a professional home kit we offer in Stafford that is safe to use and offers fantastic teeth whitening performance, we'll advise you on how to use it safely and correctly.
